Woodstock Skating Club
January Newsletter

Welcome to the WINTER 2012 Session!    For our new skaters and families, we hope that this is just the beginning of many years of participation with our club.  For our returnees, we are thrilled to have you back and we look forward to being an integral part of your continued growth and enjoyment in skating.
We have a small Board of Directors this year (we are always welcoming new members) who are dedicated to ensure that each skater has a successful, progressive and, above all, fun skating experience.  The Board of Directors, along with Marie, are always willing to hear your positive feedback and to discuss any concerns you may have.  Messages can be left through the office.  Like any organization, we can only be as good as the strength of our volunteers.  If you can help out in any way, please call the office.
Be sure to read your newsletters to keep informed of upcoming events of the skating club!

Ice Show

Plans for this year’s Ice Show are underway. Our theme is “A Storybook on Ice” as we celebrate the 77th year of the Woodstock Skating Club. There will be only one show on Thursday, March 8th, 2012 at 6:30 pm at Southwood Arena. Tickets will be available at the door for $5.00 each.  Please note the change of date!

All club skaters are encouraged to participate in their group number or numbers. Lists will be posted at the arena during sessions for the next several weeks so please check whether your skater is participating. Information about practises, costumes and pictures will be provided in the coming weeks.

We are always looking for volunteers to help make our show a success.  Please sign-up on the lists which will be posted at the arena, if you are interested.

Fundraising
Many thanks to parents for selling Mint Smoothies!  We have more to sell in the office.  Take as many as you think you can sell for $2.00 each, then pay when you sell them.  Come in and pick up some up today!

LOTTERY TICKET STUBS ARE NOW DUE !!!
The draw is next month, so please bring your lottery book ticket stubs, with the cover, to the office.  If you have not sold them . . . put your own name on them . . . maybe you could be the winner of the Grand Prize!

Volunteers Needed
Volunteers are needed for the competition to be held in Woodstock on Friday, February 3rd and
Sunday, February 5th.
If you are available Friday morning for set up or Sunday afternoon for take down, this is a great way to work off your $100 volunteer cheque, in only one day!
Please see Marie in the skating office if you are able to help out.

For Sale in the Office
From club clothing sales, we have a pair of Red Plaid Shorts, size youth medium ($20.99) and a pair of Blue Plaid Pants, size youth small ($28.10).

Remember, your fundraising deposit cheque will be returned to you by participating in club activities and/or fundraising!

The CanSkate Session
Woodstock Skating Club has Skate Canada Professional Coaches on every session of CanSkate as well as a number of Program Assistants and Junior Program Assistants.

The CanSkate session runs for 45 minutes.  During this time it is planned to run as follows:
Part of Session    Activity Planned
Warm-Up     Action Song
                                 Follow the Leader
                                                Send Skaters off to groups
Lesson Time    Go Forwards
                              Go Backwards
                                                 Stop, Turn, Spin, Jump
             Cool-Down      Follow the Leader

The skaters are divided into groups by badges which are delineated through the colour of the badge they have completed:
Orange, Yellow & Green         working towards first badge
        Red                    1st badge earned
        Blue                    2nd badge earned
        Purple                3rd badge earned
Depending on the enrollment - there can be multiple numbers of groups for each colour and these will vary through the season as the children pass from one badge to another.

Name tags need to be put on each day your child skates.  You will find them on the table just outside Dressing Room 5.  It should have your child’s name on it as well as a sticker which represents the colour group they are in.  Please ensure your child returns their name tag each day they skate so it will be there for them at their next session.

PROGRAM ASSISTANTS (PAs)
Program Assistants are a vital link to our club’s success.  Without them, our group sessions would be in disorder.  Program assistants are there to help our Professional Coaches running the session.  They are skaters from our Novice, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Sessions who have a skating knowledge and background.  All PAs have taken a training course.  Parents are reminded that all program assistants are volunteers giving their time because of their love for skating!  They are not paid for their time.
What is their role?
•    to be able to follow instructions from the Skate Canada Coach
•    to demonstrate skills and teaching progressions and reinforce these skills
•    to lead warm-ups and cool-downs with the Skate Canada Coach
•    to assist with handing out awards and incentives
•    to act as role models for young skaters
Communication
The club puts out a regular newsletter.  Please check your skater’s file (on the table with the name tags) each skating day for any new information.  As well, there is a poster board hung on the glass on the right side of the doorway where the children enter the ice each session.  This poster board will also announce upcoming events (dress-up days, cancellation dates, fundraising dates etc.).  Your orange Skater’s Guide is also filled with valuable information.  Please feel free to call the WSC office should you need additional assistance or clarification.
Getting Ready for Skating
Usually, there is a skating session before CanSkate starts.  All skaters need to be clear of the board area until 10 minutes before their session begins.  Skates can be put on in the bleachers or in dressing rooms.  When entering the arena, look for the dressing room assignment board posted outside the complex office to see which rooms have been designated for ‘WSC’’.
