- Skaters should be supervised.
- A parent or an adult responsible for the skater must be either inside the rink or in the arena lobby for the duration of their CanSkate session.
- Always keep both entrances to the ice clear and view the session from upstairs or the glass boards, NOT the players bench areas.
- Respect the skater/coach relationship.
- Our coaches follow the Skate Canada curriculum. If a parent is concerned about the progress of a skater, you should discuss the situation with one of our coaches, who can explain the progress reporting in further detail.
- If your child is having private lessons and will be absent from a session, please contact your coach directly in advance.
- All arrangements for private lessons, including coaching fees, are made between the parent and coach. Once a parent has arranged for private lessons with an individual, that person becomes the skater’s primary coach. According to Skate Canada guidelines, another coach should not intentionally solicit a skater away from a coach. If a parent or skater determines that a coaching change is in the best interest of a skater, he or she should inform the primary coach.
- Skaters who have overdue lesson fees with any of our coaches may not be able to continue private lessons until the account is brought up to date.
- All skaters are expected to comply with the Woodstock Skating Club (WSC’s), Skate Ontario's, and Skate Canada’s CODE OF CONDUCT.
Violations of WSC’s Parent Code of Conduct will not be tolerated. If you have concerns, either speak to your skater’s coach, or seek out a member of our Board of Directors.
Parents will be contacted if acts contrary to the code of conduct are reported and in severe and/or repeat cases a suspension of membership (short or long term) is possible.
Ice Etiquette
- Parents of skaters are responsible for the behaviour of their children during all sessions.
- The use of profane language is unacceptable. All Woodstock Skating Club members must show respect to all coaches, skaters and volunteers at all times. Each skater must act with due regard and consideration for others, both on the ice and off the ice. Failure to do so, as judged by the Session Convenor will result in immediate removal of the offending skater from the ice and/or arena for a period of time up to the end of that session.
- Manners are important. Coaches should not be asked to move and they should always be shown respect. Yelling across the ice is not appropriate. Please be respectful of all skaters and coaches at all times.
- Each skater must act with due regard and consideration for others, both on the ice and off the ice. Failure to do so, as judged by the Session Convenor will result in immediate removal of the offending skater from the ice and/or arena for a period of time up to the end of that session.
- All skaters must get up quickly after falling unless injured, so as to not endanger other skaters on the ice.
- Do not stand still in the middle of the ice. If you do take a break, make sure to stand against the boards away from the LUTZ corners.
- No food, gum, candy, or drinks of any kind are permitted on the ice.
- Ice etiquette rules are in effect at all times.
- The first coach hired by the skater’s parents for private lessons is known as the base or primary coach. In accordance with Skate Canada guidelines, any other coach wishing to teach the skater in any discipline must first get approval from the Primary Coach. Please be aware it is against Skate Canada guidelines for any coach to “solicit” a skater away from another coach. If after meeting and discussion with their Primary Coach, a skater and parent determine that it is in the skater’s best interest and there are valid and beneficial reasons to make a coaching change, then etiquette dictates that the skater’s parents ask their selected new coach if they would be willing and have time to teach the skater, if so, then the parents inform the former coach of the change and pay them in full before taking any lessons from the new coach. Skate Canada and WSC requires that the former primary coach gracefully relinquish any skater that wishes to change coaches.
- Encouraging words are welcome. Bragging, boasting, and put downs are neither acceptable nor tolerated in any way. This is especially important on Test Days and at Competitions. We encourage Personal Bests, not medals. Any parent/skater who believes a child’s self esteem or skating ability is being attacked by another skater should first speak to their skater’s coach, who will in turn discuss the situation with the appropriate parties. In the event that an acceptable outcome is not achieved OR the parent is uncomfortable discussing the situation with the coach, the parent is advised to approach a member of WSC’s Board of Directors.
Failure to abide by the above rules may result in the offending skater being removed from the ice. Continuous or flagrant abuse of the Ice Etiquette rules may result in the expulsion from the club.
The following order determines the right of way during Free Skate sessions:
- A skater whose solo music is being played.
- A skater who is receiving a private lesson.
- Skaters who are practicing.
Session Protocol
- Free skating is not permitted during any dance sessions unless a private lesson is being taught by a Coach.
- Skaters are permitted to skate on a session they do not qualify for exclusively for the receiving of a private lesson from a Coach and must leave the ice immediately after the lesson.
- Guest skating fees will apply.
- Appropriate skating attire is required for all skaters on the ice. Jeans are discouraged.
Skaters not complying with this rule will be asked to leave the ice by the Session Convenor.

- Coaches may only request one program at a time and only for the skater receiving a private lesson from that Coach.
- Requests for music for group lessons will not be considered (Dance music is exempt).
- A program may be repeated only after all other programs in the order have been played unless requested by a Professional.
- Dance music may be played on the Free Skate and Skills sessions only at the request of the Coach.
- Free Skate and Interpretive music will not be played during the dance session except by the request of the Coach.
